Shenmue HD rumor by Rice Digital
« on: February 25, 2017, 07:43:13 PM »

A new rumor claiming HD remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2 will be released this year has been posted by UK-based website Rice Digital, citing "a trusted source close to Atlus USA".

"No further details have been revealed to us regarding the release," says the report, "We were told it is 'safe to assume a PC/Steam release', there has been no indication that the Shenmue HD Remasters will appear on any other platform."

As always, we recommend caution when reading such rumors. It could be true, but we have no reason to assume that it is. The same site, which has posted articles with such titles as "Why Shenmue 3 Must Never Be Made" and "10 Crowdfunded Projects That Made More Money Than the Shenmue III Kickstarter, and are Therefore Better", once reported that a successor to the Wii U would be playable on the show floor at E3 2014 - according to sources.

Make no mistake, anonymous sources are an important part of journalism. Without them, very little information would be leaked, for fear of personal consequences. Nobody at the Sega-owned Atlus USA, even if they were privy to the details of a Shenmue remastering, would dare go on record to let the cat out of the bag, as it would almost certainly cost them their job. That said, we do feel more comfortable trusting the unnamed sources of higher profile news outlets, that stand to gain little extra publicity from a sensational scoop.

To back up the veracity of today's report on Shenmue HD, Rice Digital cites recent examples of Sega exploring the possibility of such a project, including the registering of related domain names and a quote from community manager Dan Sheridan, which we have covered here in the past. However, it also cites a 2010 "leak" that we have always considered a hoax, which leaves us questioning the site's diligence when reporting a story like this.

For the time being, this is just another hopeful "maybe" on the road to Shenmue 1 & 2 remasters, which, if released, would presumably make it onto PlayStation 4 as well as PC to accommodate all those interested in Shenmue III. That's what would make the most sense, however this is Sega and so ultimately nothing can be assumed - including the release of these remasters at all.

This coming Friday, the #SaveShenmueHD campaign continues with another monthly Tweetathon, seeking a firm commitment from Sega to remaster Shenmue 1 & 2 in time for the sequel's release. For more information, please see our front page.

The author of the Rice Digital article has added the following comment on the site:

Just to clarify on a few points.

Not saying it won't come out on PS4 - just that my source didn't mention it when I pressed him.

The only certainties that I know of are:

1/ The remasters are basically done
2/ They'll be out this year

My source refused to clarify publisher or platforms.
