December 3rd events for Shenmue fans
« on: November 26, 2016, 05:00:18 AM »

Sony's annual PlayStation Experience (PSX) event is coming up, due to take place over the weekend beginning December 3rd at the Anaheim Convention Center, and kicking off with a PlayStation Showcase at 10am PT on the Saturday (check your local time here).

It's not yet known whether anything Shenmue-related will feature on the show, but recent comments from Shenmue III co-producer Cédric Biscay indicate that new content may be presented if it's ready in time. The reactions of privileged fans who, during their backer reward dinner with Yu Suzuki in September, saw more advanced footage than has ever been made public (and which was already four months old at the time) suggest that what we may see on December 3rd will drop jaws and quash any concerns or doubts that ever existed about this crowdfunded sequel.

So, fingers crossed it makes the final cut.

Following the PlayStation Showcase, a new fan-made "Shenmue II: The Movie" will be shown for the first time on Shenmue Dojo's Twitch channel, which relaunches that day. This compiles visually enhanced scenes from the second game to relay the story in much the same way as Shenmue: The Movie, recently remastered by the same fan, Brian "Mr .357" McFee.

As for remakes, remasters, or re-releases of Shenmue 1 & 2 themselves, these remain the sole responsibility of Sega, whose latest comments in September state that the project has not yet been greenlit due to licensing hurdles but has their "full attention." We're aware of no particular reason to expect an announcement at PSX, though we wouldn't rule it out either. We just hope they get their ice skates on and produce these original chapters for today's audience before Shenmue III arrives around a year after this event.

Which is why December 3rd proves a great opportunity for the monthly #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon, continuing the social media campaign for these games amidst the potential excitement around Shenmue III at PSX. Whatever the day may (or may not) bring, we hope you'll join us to spread the word and be heard on the 3rd, because Team Yu needs YOU for Shenmue 1 & 2!

To update those of you not watching live, PSX did not produce any Shenmue news. As warned by Shenmue III co-producer Cédric Biscay, it was always a little up in the air whether a new trailer would make it onto the show or not. And of course, the odds were typically against a surprise from Sega concerning HD versions of the first two games.

So are we disheartened?

Hell no!

While today's PlayStation Showcase turned out not to be the platform for showcasing the progress made on either front, it will be our turn soon. Many other gamers had their chance to celebrate today, and we know that when new footage of Shenmue III has been polished and unveiled to the world, we'll all be blown away one more time, just as Yu Suzuki's guests were in September.

For now, as we look forward to that day, the fight continues to #SaveShenmueHD with the December 3rd Tweetathon that rumbles on for a few hours yet!

Meanwhile, a fan-made Shenmue II: The Movie is debuting over at, where you can live chat with other fans right now.

What a day!

The excitement around a potential Shenmue III trailer at PSX was palpable, and while it didn't make the showcase line-up on this occasion, we're encouraged that a Kickstarter game still deep in development could generate so much talk without any guarantee of an appearance. It bodes well for the moment the next footage is finally revealed, for which many opportunities and options remain.

Having received some tweets from disappointed fans, French-speaking co-producer Cédric Biscay reminded us all that plans can change for any number of reasons:

"Hello, for your information I am not in charge of the PSX program. Stay tuned for the next update from the dev team." [link]

The event also didn't bring news from Sega on any forthcoming remakes or remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2, but at least the project was there in some form, thanks to campaign supporter @ScottYeah who tweeted this photo of the hashtag he added to public chalkboards at the Anaheim Convention Center. Every little helps!

And so we say thank you and kudos to everyone who participated in the Tweetathon throughout the day, either with chalk or good old fashioned digital media, and we look forward to the next event on January 3rd, when we hope you'll join us in ringing in the new year for Sega with another determined chorus of #SaveShenmueHD!

As a postscript to the chatter about PlayStation Experience 2016, we wholly recommend this article by Switch at the Phantom River Stone blog, looking at comments from Shibuya Productions' Cédric Biscay and Sony's Gio Corsi, both of whom have been instrumental in the ongoing revival of this long-dormant series.
