The music of Shenmue
« on: July 03, 2014, 08:10:09 AM »
What are your favorite musical tracks from Shenmue, and what feelings do they evoke when you hear them outside of the game?

Have you ever introduced the music to someone who hasn't played Shenmue, and if so, what were their impressions of it?

The Shenmue music, like everything else in the game, is incredible and I LOVE it!!!

I often listen to Shenmue music when working.  The orchestral versions of To Continent and Sea is so powerful and always gives me this feeling of urgency and drama.

I have indeed introduced the Shenmue music to someone who has never played Shenmue and they loved it... but that wasn't a surprise :)

One of the musical pieces of Shenmue that I find awe inspiring, even thought it lasts short in duration, is the following one called "Meditation": http://youtu.be/PjUw95_hznM It inspires the sense of courage, motivation, to feel powerful and determined, with a serious and strong look in your face. I have used it sometimes when I want to start something demanding, that requires total self-discipline.

The music in Shenmue is so good!!! I really love the Shenmue theme, especially the variant played at the end of Shenmue: The Movie. Earth and Sea is also one of my favorite tracks, to me it always made the action occurring that much more intense. And when i'm in the right mood i'll even listen to Wish too, it just gives me this melancholy feeling because I don't know if Ryo ever saw Nozomi again. If anything we need Shenmue 3 to get more great music!!!

I always stick the Shenmue OST on when I'm having trouble sleeping. It calms me down so effectively, that I just drift off into a peaceful slumber.

Of course, then I wake up and realise that I was only dreaming that Shenmue III had been announced. But then I listen to the music again. :)

As for favourite tracks, I particularly enjoy 'Shenhua' and 'Sea and Continent Beyond'. I also find it interesting that everyone seems to have different translations for the same tracks. Maybe we could do with a universal track listing or something.

That suits perfectly with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dKObwDDKUQ

Free 1 is a perennial fav of mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84jVIRENnVA

Makes me feel like I'm floating through a peaceful paradise land, but after I've smoked too much weed and am expecting imminent doom and oppression to swallow me whole. I feel simultaneously at peace and uneasy.

I listen to the music of Shenmue a lot! The game contains some of the most beautiful and inspiring music I've ever heard and it's all so varied in style and in the feelings it evokes.

I love the piano tracks like Rain and Nozomi's Confession. I also love Encounter With Destiny which is distinctly different. Then there's Waves of Morning Haze which, again, is something else entirely. I often listen to these tracks and more when I'm working on poems.

Tomato Convenience Store is a favourite for different reasons. FREE 1, Departure For Hope and all the tracks from Guilin in Shenmue II are amazing. I do Tai Chi to a lot of those ones. I highly recommend the SEGA Piano Nocturne album for the solo piano version of Shenhua's theme on there if you haven't heard it.

Almost forgot to mention that I listen to the Christmas tracks every year in December.

I also love Audio Sprite's covers. He started with a mash up of Shenmue and Earth & Sea. And more recently he covered Shenhua too. Awesome stuff. :)

I've got every bit of Shenmue music I can find on my iPod now. I particularly love the putting on in the background the complete in-game music for Aberdeen and Wan Chai when I'm sitting around getting some work done. Together about 2.5 hrs long and it's lovely to listen to. Also, for some reason, it makes me work harder.

There really are too many good songs to choose from, but Cherry BLossom Wind Dance has always been one of my favorites. And how can i forget the holy trinity of strange Shenmue music, Hip De Hop, Barry Jones, and Cool Z's theme. I have a lot of Shenmue ring tones and people often ask what they're from.

I think its called Haze on the Morning Wave (Or something similar) its the piece played when Ryo wakes on Wongs boat after getting battered by the Heavens. It's beautiful! The piece itself is so fitting for the series. Once it hits about one minute 10 it just reminds me of hope even in the darkest of moments. I could listen to it all day if im honest...

I also really love the Shenmue Theme Xmas Ver from the first game that plays on the streets of dobuita about Decmber 15th time. It gets me more in the festive mood than any xmas song does -
