I just bought a JXD!
« on: May 09, 2015, 06:26:08 PM »
So, I just ordered a JXD s7800b tablet (managed to convince the wife; a victory in itself). I'm in need of a tablet anyway, and I like what this one is capable of: emulation!

I've been looking on Youtube at experiences with the Dreamcast emulation, and found this promising video:

When it arrives, I'll share some video (ordering a HDMI cable for it too) and let you know how it plays. The tablet also allows you to assign physical buttons to Android games, so I'll be mapping them to Excite QTA2, and I'll share that too.

Very interested in hearing how your experiences compare with this review, specifically the app storage issue (a problem that's bad enough on phones, let alone a device primarily intended for downloading games).

I've been looking at custom ROMs for it, and there are supposed to be a fair few that solve the issues. I'll take a closer look when I have it in front of me.

I know the frustration of it on phones. My phone has next to no space on it at all. I had to uninstall a few apps just to download Excite QTA2.

Welp. after a while with it, I can honestly say that I am 100% pleased with my purchase. And even more pleased that I replaced the stock firmware with a custom ROM.

The stock firmware comes with an app called Happy Chick, which allows downloads of emulators and games. It's in badly broken Engrish, and games can come in many different languages. I installed a custom firmware which, apart from increasing the space available for installing apps, removes all the bloatware that comes pre-installed and can't be shifted.

The custom firmware I'm using comes with a launcher and keymapper pre-installed, and also spoofs the device to identify as a Samsung Galaxy S3 on the Google Play Store.

It runs Android games really well (although, to be fair, I haven't installed anything too taxing). And emulators... oh my.

Basically, I'm mostly going for the .emu apps by Robert Broglia. Not only do they have native support for the JXD's physical buttons, but they are the most stable emulator apps I've used. Check out Snes9x EX+ for a free example of his work. Other emulators I'm currently using are DraStic, PPSSPP and reicast.

So far, the only emulator I'm having trouble with is reicast. I'm hoping the issue will be solved with r7, but at least I can play Shenmue for now (albeit with Ryo's eyes sticking out). DraStic runs beautifully (allowing me to play Mario Kart DS or Phoenix Wright again), and thanks to PPSSPP I can play PaRappa the Rapper again. Again, all the emulators I've used so far support physical buttons.

Next on my agenda is getting Saturn games running. Robert Broglia has a beta Saturn.emu app that I'm about to test with NiGHTS.

Informative. - I was drooling for one, until I got as a present an Android phone. - It is interesting that Snes9x EX+ has Wiimote support.

Indeed. Although not on the JXD it isn't; the tablet has no bluetooth connectivity at all. :/

Anyhoo, I'm thinking of recording some footage using my capture card, so I'll make a video soon and show you the quality.

If reicast improves Shenmue's compatibility with the next release, portable Shenmue will be flawless!
