January 3rd Tweetathon
« on: January 05, 2015, 02:49:51 AM »

The aim of the January 3rd #SaveShenmue Tweetathon was to kick off 2015 with a strong statement of intent, from a fanbase that's now further removed from the release of Shenmue II than the first game was from its 1986 setting.

And to the surprise of nobody here, that's exactly what you did. You stormed the castle in your droves, with a public protest that let Sega and all bystanders know what kind of year lays ahead if the publisher continues to hold out on its most passionate audience.

Attracting support from corners as diverse as rapper Lil B the BasedGod and the hosts of the ACMI Game Masters exhibition (who presented Yu Suzuki with an award in July 2012), your #SaveShenmue tweets dominated news feeds across Twitter all day long, raising awareness of the campaign and keeping the pressure on those in a position to end it once and for all.

You also let your creative sides out to play, including a detailed promo video by Nihat Yalcin ( and a full 1080p HD, 60fps tribute to the series by Dreamcasters' Tube (, who previously helped us out with clips for our website.

In addition, there were no less than three (that magic number) online music streams celebrating the occasion with a steady flow of classics from the Shenmue soundtrack, with Video Gamer Radio and Shenmue Radio joining longtime contributors GBR gamebytesradio for a widespread audio extravaganza. Play with Friends also hosted their monthly #SaveShenmue video stream, playing the game with interaction from viewers.

The Tweetathon truly is a phenomenal event, made that way by a global fanbase as varied as the content of the game they adore and as committed as the man who designed it, the incomparable Yu Suzuki, whose never-say-die attitude in pursuing a chance to conclude the saga inspires and motivates the same heart and iron will amongst his growing army of supporters.

By lending your voice every 3rd of the month, you are part of the biggest routine campaign event in the history of gaming, blazing a trail like Shenmue before it. Your enthusiasm and dedication has made this game a talking point both in and around the industry, and that momentum will continue to build through 2015 if you keep spreading the word to be heard on the 3rd.

Together, we will right a wrong that haunts an entire medium.

Together, we will remind publishers that supply follows demand.

Together, we will set a precedent from which ALL gamers shall benefit.

Together, we WILL #SaveShenmue.

During every #SaveShenmue Tweetathon, the AutoTweet feature of sends out a simultaneous collection of messages that you have pre-loaded, together with a featured web link that we have chosen for that month's event.

This past Saturday, your stored tweets were released with a link to an Edge article that we recently discussed, promoting the campaign back in April last year.

Prior to the AutoTweet, Edge's sharing statistics at the top of the article looked like this:

And here's how they looked around 90 minutes later:

You can check the current stats on the page here.

This provides us with clear evidence of the power of the AutoTweet in publicizing our common message. This is a strong tool that we encourage all fans to make use of.

All you have to do is sign into this very site with your Twitter account and activate the AutoTweet feature with your custom message. This will then be tweeted on your behalf every 3rd of the month, allowing us to reach an even wider audience with news of the #SaveShenmue campaign.

It works - just ask Edge!
