Shenmue Movie
« on: August 26, 2014, 06:50:45 AM »
I've watched the Shenmue Movie many times over the years. But was there ever any talk of an actual Shenmue Movie? Given the amazing things that can be done with movies these days, would anyone want to see one made? Not sure if I would or not? Also, if they were made into movies, I think they'd be more likely to make a Shenmue 3 movie than a Shenmue 3 game. How would you feel if the story was finished in film rather than as a game? I love the cinema, my second home.

Hell, the ending to Shenmue could come in the form of a bubblegum wrapper comic, and I'd take that shit.

I dunno man, I'm sort of in the "game or nothing" category. I'm not sure Shenmue is something that could ever really be translated successfully to film. All the magic of the experience would be lost, and so I think it would inevitably end up a painful and disappointing experience. I think Yu Suzuki has been right to hold on to the more quixotic, well I shouldn't even call it quixotic should I, but to hold on to the goal of finishing things through games rather than try to conclude things through a different, cheaper medium, which would still require him to wrestle the license off of Sega anyway.

I was surprised when in one of the last interviews Yu did, he mentioned wanting to finish things off in two games or something, rather than trying to tie everything up with Shenmue 3,  but it also makes me happy to see him so optimistic about the fate of the series, and that he clearly doesn't want to just bosh out a courtesy conclusion to shut us up, he wants to do  it right.

I just want an ending. I don't care how that ending is presented to me. Game would be preferable, but manga, anime, novel or live-action film would do.
