What favourites do you guys have besides Shenmue? Would be interesting to see if we say similar titles or genres, also good to check out any recommendations a Shenmue fan may enjoy while we wait for S3.

Here's some of mine (there's many, many more):

Silent Hill (2nd favourite franchise, love it to bits)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (favourite JRPG of all time & reminds me a lot of Shenmue)
Deus Ex (Original, 2000) for PC
Thief GOLD
Star Wars: Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Die Hard Arcade
Still Life 1 for PC (best female protagonist)
Mass Effect
Tomb Raider 2013

Ace Attorney series.

My second most favourite game after the Shenmue series.

And I discovered it thanks to the game: Socrates Jones: Pro Philosopher.

Quickly and in no particular order:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)
Banjo-Kazooie
Grand Theft Auto V
The Nomad Soul (aka Omikron)
To the Moon
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
WWE SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain
Super Mario 64
Portal 2
The Warriors

Honorable mentions:

Soul Bubbles
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Jewel Quest Expeditions
Mortal Kombat: Deception
Grand Theft Auto IV
Super Mario Galaxy
Streets of Rage
Yakuza 2
Thomas Was Alone
Fable II

Of these, the game I'd most recommend for Shenmue fans is The Nomad Soul/Omikron. Also, while not listed, a game called Shadow of Memories (aka Shadow of Destiny). Track them down. :)

So Shadow of Memories is good? I've thought about getting that so many times over the years but never did.

As for me, I'd recommend Zone Of The Enders The First of Mars. In my opinion it's the best Zone of the Enders game, and the third best game ever made. Such an overlooked game. Not that it's in the slightest like Shenmue, but everyone should still play it.

I'm a big fan of the Zelda and Uncharted series; pretty much every game I've played from those has been awesome (sold my 3DS prior to A Link Between Worlds). Some of my favourite games are Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Mario Bros 3, several entries in the Final Fantasy series (particularly V & VIII), ModNation Racers, the Monkey Island series, the Batman: Arkham series, the Streets of Rage series, and several of the classic 4-player side-scrolling arcade titles (Simpsons, Turtles, Avengers, etc).

I can't place them in order. There's no point trying. All I know is Shenmue and Shenmue II are joint first.

Do it. I'm sure a lot of gamers would call it boring because there's no action, it's all "walking around and talking to people," but Shenmue fans will slip into this style like a hand in a glove, and your reward will be one of the most unique games you've ever played.

I loved those games (not familiar with Avengers but my cousin and I completed X-Men), and was heartbroken when I returned somewhere after fifteen years recently and discovered they no longer had the Simpsons machine. :(

Interesting. Please (and all members of these forums), suggest more games like that, which sound like Shenmue. The desire for more Shenmue-style games is unbearable. But, games that resemble Shenmue in some way or another, are welcomed, too.

Speaking of side scrolling games, anyone here a fan of the Metal Slug series? I'm a big advocate of Metal Slug 2 in particular. Think it's only a 2 player game, but for me it's the finest side scrolling shooter ever made. I first discovered it on an arcade cab that you could play for free if you turned it off and on at the mains. Sweet times.

@Giorgio

I don't really know any Shenmue -esque games aside from Deadly Premonition. But that's a obvious recommendation of course. Great game though, with a great soundtrack and great voice acting.

Really? Sounds like I need to play it then, pretty sure it's dirt cheap too.

I have heard about Deadly Premonition. I haven't played it, but it is labelled as a psychological horror game, therefore it is the kind of game that I don't really like. I want to feel bright after playing it and not psychologically darkened.

haha yeah, though it's not a psychological horror game that takes itself particularly seriously to be fair. It's full of bizarre humour, and the VA that plays the main character is masterful in his comic timing. It does have it's darker elements too, but it's definitely nothing like your Silent Hills et al that are truly disturbing and even I struggle to play.

Deadly Premonition definitely has very different themes and atmosphere to Shenmue (and the shooting bits are terrible slogs), but it still feels like it has that Shenmue spirit somewhere in it. Mainly in the way its world has been built and its details, like the characters who all have their little routines ect.

I tallied up our picks and judging from the top 5 most popular genre choices among our replies a typical Shenmue fan is most likely to enjoy (in order from most popular to least popular):
•   Sega classics
•   Games with a focus on open world exploration.
•   Nintendo classics (particularly Mario and Zelda)
•   RPGs (Western most popular)
•   Shooters & Fighters (draw)
