Campaign News / Help add Ryo Hazuki to new Sega mobile game
« on: February 08, 2018, 04:36:44 AM »

Here's something all Shenmue fans can do to draw a little more attention to the franchise.

Sega is currently preparing a new mobile game in Japan, and is using the lure of new characters to drive pre-registrations.

Much like Kickstarter projects unlock new stretch goals once certain funding targets are met, this campaign adds new characters once certain numbers pre-register for the game (which is free-to-play).

So far 50,000 people have pre-registered. Sega says that if this number passes 55,000, Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki will be added to the game.

While it's hardly Shenmue HD, putting Ryo in front of thousands or even millions of new eyes (depending on the game's success) will raise awareness of our favorite martial arts student as a character and create interest in the source material. Every little helps in raising Shenmue's stock as a viable, relevant IP in 2018.

Full details are provided by the Phantom River Stone blog. This link explains the pre-registration process that we encourage all Shenmue fans to follow, to boost those numbers and unlock Ryo for a new audience!

Campaign News / Chinese fans donate more books to Guilin school
« on: February 03, 2018, 05:30:46 AM »

A primary school for underprivileged children in Guilin, China, has recently received a donation of 166 books, paid for by Chinese fans of the Shenmue series of video games partly set in the remote area.

It's the latest chapter in a remarkable story that began during Shenmue III's Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Two American brothers volunteering at the elementary school donated substantial personal funds to the crowdfunding appeal, hoping to use the associated perks to draw wider attention to the school and its needs.

Before such rewards could even be finalized, media coverage of their intentions caught the eyes of the Chinese Shenmue fan community, which set about honoring the brothers' contributions to the game by donating equipment and materials to the school.

In December of that year, 200 books were delivered to the young children, followed in May 2016 by a brand new projector. One fundamental snag, however: the school's bare external windows made the classroom too bright to see the projections - so by the end of the year fans had also donated curtains!

The latest donation of a further 166 books really highlights the scale of compassion and generosity inspired by Yu Suzuki's Shenmue saga, with a fan community so committed to giving these kids in Guilin a better start in life.

If you'd like to see the teachings of these games reach a wider audience amongst today's potential players, the monthly #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon brings you side by side with a global community of fans requesting of Sega that Shenmue 1 & 2 be made available on modern systems.

The next occasion is tomorrow, February 3rd, and you can pre-load a customized AutoTweet for all future events on our front page.

Thanks to our friend Li of the Shenmue bar on Baidu Tieba for helping us share this great story, and to @Jinmg86 on Twitter for pointing out that the writing on the blackboard says "Hello Shenmue."

Campaign News / Re: Yu Suzuki attending MAGIC 2018
« on: May 01, 2019, 08:35:11 PM »
Reaction to the new Shenmue III images released yesterday has been overwhelmingly positive, creating a real buzz amongst fans for both the game and Shibuya Productions' upcoming Magic Monaco event on February 24th, where new information will be shared by Yu Suzuki himself.

Today, the Phantom River Stone blog examines the finer details of each image unveiled at the pre-Magic press conference.

French fan site Shenmue Master attended the conference, and filmed the occasion for us all to experience.

Our previous Facebook posts about the images can be found here.

Shenmue 3 can be pre-ordered for PC and PlayStation 4 at https://shenmue.link/order.

Meanwhile, these mouthwatering images make gamers even hungrier for the chance to relive Ryo's journey from the beginning on modern platforms. After 18 years, Shenmue remains a Dreamcast exclusive until highly requested remasters of those original chapters are confirmed by Sega.

To customize a pre-loaded AutoTweet for the next monthly #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon on February 3rd, visit TeamYu.net today. For Ys Net's sequel to receive the support it deserves, from a generation of gamers with no easy access to the first two games, it's again up to fans to spread the word and be heard on the 3rd!

Campaign News / Revised Shenmue HD rumor from WWG
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:31:32 PM »

WWG is back to have another go at pinning down the status of Shenmue 1 & 2 remasters, having previously reported in September (three months after the announcement of Shenmue 3's delay) that HD versions of the original games were on course for release in 2017.

Here's their latest article: http://comicbook.com/gaming/2018/01/13/shenmue-hd-shenmue-iii-pushed-back/

It concludes with a disclaimer: "So far, these rumors go without any official word from SEGA, so we recommend readers take them with a pinch of salt for now."

On February 3rd, fans will no doubt press Sega to confirm their intentions during the monthly #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon. You can customise your preloaded message for the event right now on our front page.

Campaign News / Sega teases announcement, Shenmue fans respond
« on: January 13, 2018, 09:40:00 PM »

In the past, whenever Sega teased any kind of announcement or new game reveal, they could always count on Shenmue fans to hope against hope, speculating whether Shenmue III's day had come.

Now that Yu Suzuki has taken the task of Shenmue III into his own hands, Sega might have thought they'd washed theirs of this tradition. Alas, there's still the trifling matter of Shenmue 1 & 2 remasters, which they are repeatedly said to be "investigating" while fans nervously count down the months to the sequel, whose success may be influenced by newcomers' ability to play the original chapters first.

So when Sega's American and European social media teams yesterday posted a cryptic picture of a lightbulb and a date two weeks in the future, they immediately found themselves on the receiving end of tweets bearing the hashtag #SaveShenmueHD. Whether seeing a tenuous link to the series or none at all, fans wanted to remind the company that demand for those remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2 is still strong.

It didn't take long for information to surface that pointed to this teaser being related to an upcoming sim game by Two Point Studios - unrelated to Shenmue, just as so many red herrings had been over the years. But it was the persistence of Shenmue fans through each of those disappointments that ensured the franchise would one day live on, and it's our hope that the same will hold true for Shenmue HD.

So every month on the 3rd, fans will continue to assemble like clockwork for the routine #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon, impressing upon Sega and all observers the need for new versions of Shenmue 1 & 2. To ensure your voice is heard every month, simply customize a pre-loaded AutoTweet on our front page.

Campaign News / Shenmue rocks Sega Europe poll
« on: January 12, 2018, 04:36:05 AM »

Sega Europe recently held a poll and survey via Twitter, asking gamers to vote for their favorite Sega console and name their favorite title on that platform.

The final results are in and they speak for themselves. Thanks to @ShenmueForever on Twitter for compiling this chart, illustrating that Shenmue received over a quarter of all mentions during the Dreamcast’s race to victory!

The demand for remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2 in time for Shenmue 3 remains as strong as ever, and the #SaveShenmueHD campaign continues on February 3rd with its next monthly Tweetathon. To customize a pre-loaded tweet that guarantees your participation, visit our front page today.

Campaign News / Yu Suzuki attending MAGIC 2018
« on: December 15, 2017, 05:10:00 PM »

It has just been announced that Yu Suzuki will return as a guest to MAGIC 2018 on February 24th at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Suzuki appeared at the 2016 event, promoted by Shenmue III co-producer Cédric Biscay's Shibuya Productions, to answer questions, sign autographs, and show off new footage of the game.

Joining him this year, amongst several guests announced so far, will be Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, who helped spread the word and be heard on the 3rd in the early days of the Shenmue Tweetathon.

Campaign News / #SaveShenmueHD at PlayStation Experience
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:22:00 PM »

Shenmue remasters may not have been unveiled at PSX, but they were there in spirit thanks to Twitter user @Le_Hyro, who diligently scrawled the campaign hashtag on a visitor message wall provided at the venue.

If this post seems familiar, it's because another #SaveShenmueHD campaigner did the very same thing at last year's event.

It's great to see a tradition starting to form, with fans using every available means to promote the need for new versions of Shenmue 1 & 2.

We just hope this won't be required come next December!

To help coax an announcement out of Sega before then, you can guarantee your involvement in the Tweetathon every month on the 3rd by preloading a customized AutoTweet at TeamYu.net today.

Campaign News / Remembering Reuben Kee, ten years on
« on: November 23, 2017, 07:45:00 PM »

On November 23rd, 2007, a freak accident during the Cambodian Water Festival claimed the lives of five members of Singapore's national dragonboat team.

Amongst the victims was a talented musician and Shenmue fan, Reuben Kee.

His team mate, Justin Ong, recalls the tragic incident in a new article for Channel NewsAsia.

Ten years later, Reuben's enchanting medley of Shenmue's Sedge Tree and Shenhua themes is still adored by his fellow fans, who are now able to look forward to a Shenmue III that was only a pipe dream for this 23-year-old.

Reuben's story with regard to the game is one of many. There are tales of numerous Kickstarter backers reserving credits for the names of lost parents, siblings, and friends, with whom they have precious memories of enjoying the original chapters together.

By resuming much later in our lives than most video game sagas, Shenmue has come to mean that little bit more. The human story of this game is more powerful and poignant than even its own script could hope to be.

On this Thanksgiving, we raise a glass in gratitude to those who made us lifelong fans, and made the uncertain wait bearable for our shared dream to come true.

When the title screen loads and we hear the music that inspired Reuben like it inspired us all, we'll find them beside us in spirit, keeping friends, those we love, close to us.

Campaign News / November 3rd Tweetathon and supporting Shenmue 500K
« on: November 04, 2017, 10:10:00 PM »

A big THANK YOU to everyone who took part in yesterday's #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon!

The monthly event reminds Sega of its responsibility to make the original chapters of the series available in time for Shenmue III. Still only released on the Dreamcast, a console that's been out of production for over 15 years, Shenmue played a pivotal role in the evolution of video games as we know them today, and deserves a place on modern hardware for new players to enjoy before they embark on Ys Net's long awaited sequel.

The combined efforts of fans around the world in a coherent, measured application of the Four Wude helped enable the resurrection of this important franchise, but there is work yet to be done. So kudos to everyone who pulled together yesterday and every month on the 3rd, continuing the organized movement towards restoring the saga from its roots to its leaves, blossoming for generations to come.

The Tweetathon also provided a platform to address an issue more internal to the fan base. An array of Shenmue community outlets took the opportunity to express solidarity with Shenmue 500K, a Facebook group that recently interviewed Yu Suzuki at Gamescom and for years has had to deal with numerous fake accounts and pages sewing deliberate confusion amongst well-meaning fans. In response to increased absurdity from the imposters, including personal threats to group staff and recorded hacking attempts on the real website (Shenmue500K.net) and Twitter account (@shen500k), a united front was presented by the following outlets:

Phantom River Stone

Shenmue AM2 Podcast

Shenmue.de

Shenmue Dojo

Shenmue Forever

Shenmue Lounge

Shenmue Master

Team Yu

With this universal recognition from so many established corners of the fan community, as well as the hyperlinked button on every page of Shenmue III's official website (shenmue.link), there is no room for doubt over which facilities labelled "Shenmue 500K" are legitimate and which are not.

If you'd like to join the group itself and take part in ongoing Shenmue discussion, hop over to facebook.com/groups/Shenmue500K

Thanks once again to everyone who participated in Friday's event, and we look forward to seeing you next time on December 3rd (always the 3rd!), when many eyes will be on Sony's PlayStation Experience in California - arguably the last chance for those rumors swearing upon a 2017 release for Shenmue HD to come true...

Campaign News / Cedric Biscay meets up with Yu Suzuki
« on: November 03, 2017, 07:11:00 AM »

"Nice meeting tonight in Tokyo!"

Shenmue 3 co-producer Cédric Biscay shared this photo today of his visit to Japan, touching base with the game's director Yu Suzuki.

It's the latest in a series of travels for the Shibuya Productions boss. In August the Monaco native cut a vacation short to attend Gamescom in Germany, where Suzuki was meeting with fans and the media. There we took the opportunity for our first interview with Cédric, which you can watch here if you missed it.

"Really?? Sure?? Thanks for the info. ;D ;D" says Olivier Comte, head of the French division of Koch Media, owners of Deep Silver (Shenmue 3 publisher and frequent partner with Sega).

Olivier recently visited Ys Net in Japan and shared photos from the studio, including a glimpse of development on a monitor in the background.
