Shenmue Chat / Shenmue & nullDC - Teething troubles
« on: August 31, 2014, 04:47:09 PM »
So, I've finally decided to grab the Shenmue-optimised version of nullDC and add it to my copy of RomStation. However, I keep getting an error code when trying to start the emulator, either through RomStation or by starting the executable directly. It's one of those standard 0x000007b error codes.

Before that, it was a missing DLL file, which I downloaded and copied to both my System32 folder (which did nothing) and my nullDC file path (which changed the error code to the one above).

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I really want to start grabbing some HD screenshots of the in-game locations to use on my Shenmuenopoly board. Some advice on the issue from one of you tech-wizards would really be appreciated. :D

Shenmue Chat / Earning Yen - Limit or Bug?
« on: August 19, 2014, 07:21:01 PM »
There have been a number of occasions where I haven't earned Yen for a post, either when replying to a thread or starting a new one. For example, the thread I just made called "What would you change?" didn't earn me any Yen.

Is this a bug, or is there a limit on the amount of Yen you can earn?

Note: This post also never earned Yen.

Shenmue Chat / What would you change?

We've all seen that fan-made HD remake, and boy is it gorgeous. And I've noticed a few people have mentioned their appreciation for the redesigned arcade. Having all those games in the arcade would certainly be possible on a blu-ray release... and so would much more.

So, what changes would you like to see (or rather, wouldn't mind) to out beloved Shenmue?

For me, I wouldn't mind the ability to listen to the cassette player while walking around. Even cooler would be a little animation of Ryo putting on some headphones, and taking them off whenever he starts to talk to someone.

Also, I loved having the Saturn at home... but I think for chronological authenticity, I'd rather see Ryo have a Master System.

Finally, I'd probably like to see the capsule toys have an expanded role. Maybe have some capsule toy fanatics walking around, who will offer trades for your duplicates. The toys could have ratings such as common, uncommon, rare and exclusive, and each would be worth more than the last.

For example: If you had a binsbein and the collector needed it, he would offer one of his common toys. If you had a duplicate Super Sonic, he would offer you one of his exclusive toys, 2 of his rare, 3 of his uncommon or 4 of his common.

In addition, he would sell his duplicates to you (for example, if you had nothing to trade), but at a much higher cost.

I think changes like that wouldn't change the game in a major way, and certainly wouldn't have any impact on the story, while making it feel a little more immersive.

What about you? What changes would you make, if any?

Shenmue Chat / Help wanted! Shenmue-nopoly
« on: August 07, 2014, 09:13:54 AM »
Hey there. As you may have seen on the 500k Facebook group, I'm designing a Shenmue-themed Monopoly set. And I need your help.

As you may know, a standard Monopoly board has 22 properties, 4 stations, 2 utilities, 2 taxes, Chance, Community Chest, Go, Free Parking, Go to Jail, and Jail/Just Visiting. And I have no idea what to put where.

I want to theme the set on the first Shenmue (I plan to make a Shenmue 2 version later), so I need suggestions as to what properties to have, and in what order. Obvious choices include YOU Arcade, Aida Flower Shop, Tom's Hot Dogs, Tomato Convenience Store, Asia Travel Co, etc.

For stations, I'm trying to decide between vehicles (Bus, motorbike, forklift, boat), drinks (Jet Cola, Orange Fruda, Grape Fruda, Jet Soda), or capsule machines (SEGA, Virtua Fighter, Harbor, Vehicles). Probably the vehicles, though.

For utilities, I'm stumped. Any suggestions would help.

As for the Chance and Community Chest, I'm thinking Phoenix and Dragon Mirrors.

Go currently reads "Ine-san's Daily Allowance - ¥500 - Collect as you pass", and Free Parking simply states "Let's get sweaty".

I'm thinking Go to Jail should be a guard from the Old Warehouse District. As for Jail/Just Visiting, I can't actually think of anything suitable other than the gate to the Old Warehouse District.

The art for the centre of the board is currently just a picture of Ryo... but I'm thinking the title screen would be really cool (or at least a close approximation).

So, like I said, any suggestions you guys have would be awesome!

Likewise, any HD screenshots of the locations that you might have/be able to grab would be really awesome.

Off Topic Chat / An off-topic section?
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:05:08 PM »
This is a Shenmue forum. We're all here because of that game. But, inevitably, there are gonna be non-Shenmue threads that pop up now and then (like this one). Now, while I do believe that this site is better suited for Shenmue discussions, I'm thinking that an off-topic section might be an idea.

However, if there were, you could guarantee spamming of that section for ¥. So, if there was, I think that posts in that section should not earn anything. That way, people would be encouraged to post more about Shenmue than other subjects.

It's just a thought. I dunno if you'd go for the idea or not, but I figured it would help keep the focus on Shenmue.

Shenmue Chat / Shenmue Creativity
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:55:11 PM »
I know we have a few very talented Shenmue fans in our midst. I love to see people's appreciation for Shenmue manifest itself in other mediums. So I was wondering, has anyone here made anything Shenmue-themed themselves, or have bought any homemade Shenmue-themed items?

I'll start.

My hobby is bead sprite art, which is making pixel art pictures out of plastic fuse beads. I have recently turned this hobby into a small side business, and am selling them on (cheap pop). I made myself a Ryo picture, based on the VMU icon from Shenmue.

I intend to make more of these, and fuse them all together to make a larger piece. All finished, I hope it to look like this:

I also recently commissioned a piece from Baboo Crafts, who makes amazing little amigurumi/crochet dolls. I asked for a little Ryo Hazuki to sit on my desk and keep me company.

(Fun fact: The woman behind Baboo Crafts is the wife of one of the guys at Insert Coin Clothing. He drew the tiger on little Ryo's jacket, as well as the one on the hoodies and t-shirts that many of us bought.)

Shenmue Chat / Capsule Toys End-Game?
« on: July 05, 2014, 08:27:29 PM »
I'm loving the capsule toys idea, but one thing concerns me (though it wouldn't be an issue for quite some time). At some point, it will be possible to collect every toy there is. Once that has happened, would there be any... let's say, end-game content? Like, perhaps introducing new ranges that didn't appear in Shenmue I/II, but could be possible inclusions in Shenmue III? I'm thinking Crazy Taxi, Sega All-Stars Racing/Transformed, Project Diva, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Set Radio, etc.

Like I said, it won't be an issue for quite some time, but it could become one in the future. Just a suggestion; I really do enjoy the whole idea for the forum, and will be striving to complete my collection ASAP. :D

Shenmue Chat / Shenmue Livestream
« on: July 05, 2014, 05:09:33 AM »
I've previously livestreamed an entire playthrough of Shenmue before, although not that many people watched it. I started doing a Shenmue II playthrough, but a death in the family put a bit of an abrupt end to that, and I never got back to it.

I've been thinking of doing another complete live Shenmue I & II playthrough for some time. I was toying with the idea of playing the games with viewer input, as well as discussing the themes present and what Shenmue means to us via a Skype chat or something similar. Would any of you actually be interested in that, or would I be wasting my time?

And for anyone interested, I use all genuine hardware and software; no emulation. It would be as authentic an experience as possible. Just personal preference. :)
