Shenmue Chat / Re: What would you change?
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:46:54 AM »
Agree with you, here's a few extra ideas of my own:

1) Eating. This actually bugged me a lot when I first played. You'd waste yen on some potato chips and then they'd just stay there in your inventory looking all lonely. Perhaps eating ramen in the restaurants and/or snacking could have some positive gameplay benefits, for example, Ryo advances in strength each time he has a proper meal which would in turn increase his skill ever so slightly per fight so combat would become more and more easy/blows increase amount of damage, or something similar.

2) GHOST HALL BUILDING! That QTE plank walking rubbish strikes fear into the hearts of all Shenmue fans!

3) Ryo can actually hang out with his friends. Was I the only one who felt bad for those two friends Ryo had in Yokosuka who kept checking up on him and asking him to hang out? Maybe. Despite it being silly when I'd bump into them and Ryo would reject them I'd follow them around for a bit 'pretending to hang out' so I somehow would feel less of an asshole...??? Maybe they could have a segment where a particular arcade game needs more than 1 player and that's when these guys could show up. Or maybe even via sports.

4) Probably not that fun, but what if Ine-San gave you some money to pick up some groceries for her when you go out a couple of mornings. You'd buy the items, enter the kitchen and hand them over. As thanks you'd get a reward of some sort, maybe a capsule toy or cassette she somehow found but has no use for.

5) Top notch voice acting performances.

6) I WANT THE ARCADE TO LOOK LIKE THE NOCONKID HD REMASTER *drools*

Shenmue Chat / Re: Shenmue Saturn
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:10:42 AM »
I'd like to see if certain scenes were changed or different in some way. That would probably be my motivation for playing Shenmue Saturn. I've noticed for example that in Shenmue Saturn the Phoenix Mirror is kept in a secret passage in the Hazuki yard, whereas in the Dreamcast final released they swapped it for a hidden chamber in the Dojo. Maybe at the end of Saturn Shenmue 2 something different might have happened. Maybe Ryo and Shenhua would talk for a little longer, actually walk out of the cave and BOOM! Niao Sun! "The Story Goes On."

I actually prefer the new arcade design compared to the original.

A part of me wishes that this would be like that P.T. PS4 demo, where Sega would have covered this all up as a 'fan-project' and then eventually pop out and say 'Surprise!'

I know however that Sega just isn't that cool. *sigh*

I tallied up our picks and judging from the top 5 most popular genre choices among our replies a typical Shenmue fan is most likely to enjoy (in order from most popular to least popular):
•   Sega classics
•   Games with a focus on open world exploration.
•   Nintendo classics (particularly Mario and Zelda)
•   RPGs (Western most popular)
•   Shooters & Fighters (draw)

What favourites do you guys have besides Shenmue? Would be interesting to see if we say similar titles or genres, also good to check out any recommendations a Shenmue fan may enjoy while we wait for S3.

Here's some of mine (there's many, many more):

Silent Hill (2nd favourite franchise, love it to bits)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (favourite JRPG of all time & reminds me a lot of Shenmue)
Deus Ex (Original, 2000) for PC
Thief GOLD
Star Wars: Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Die Hard Arcade
Still Life 1 for PC (best female protagonist)
Mass Effect
Tomb Raider 2013

Shenmue Chat / Re: Favorite area/ any part of shenmue etc a street?

For me it would be the harbour in Shenmue 1.  :)

Loved the feeling of Ryo venturing out of his comfort zone out of Dobuita and into the harbour. From then on Ryo starts venturing further and further from home what with Shenmue 2. But that moment when Ryo makes his way to Yokosuka harbour was the first step of Ryo's adventuring into the unknown, and I really felt it. Also the intro to disc 2 is pretty cool.
