I'm very seriously toying with the idea of making what you see in this picture. A Shenmue themed Street Fighter II style game, with a massive cast of Shenmue characters (some unlockable), and iconic locations from both games.
This is very achievable using Mugen fighter maker (the project would be called Shenmugen), simply by ripping screenshots from the games in order to create sprite sheets for each character. The moves could then be programmed to emulate real controls from Shenmue (-> -> punch for elbow assault, etc).
It's all fairly easy, but it requires a ton of sprite ripping. So if you feel like lending a hand with this, let me know (you'd need nullDC or another emulator working on your PC). For the rest of you, please tell me what / who you'd like to see in this game!

Project updates:

  • Work has only just started, but we're still very open to the idea of more people helping.
  • We've created a cdi disc image for Shenmue which lets you train on a plain pink background. This makes ripping sprites so much faster. If you're interested in helping gather sprites, I can upload this cdi for people to download and use on emulators.
  • We're currently in talks about which engine / style would be best; Mugen (Virtua Fighter) or OpenBoR (Streets of Rage). Please see the second post for details. Feel free to chime in.

I've just started playing this free game called Toribash, which is a turn-based free-form martial arts simulator. You get two dummies, one VS one, and you move their joints each turn to make an attack or a defense. Basically, it's like using two action figures to fight.

The idea with this is that you can create your own fighting styles to defeat your opponent. So of course, my first thought was to try to simulate some Hazuki style moves to see how effective they are. But the game is so damn hard, so I figured if more of us were playing it, we could make a Hazuki Dojo school guild thing, and share joint move patterns that replicate effective moves from the Shenmue games.

Was wondering if any of you play it? Give it a try anyways, it's very unique, and the potential is crazy. Here's a youtube video of a true master's fighting style, shown in a replay against a test dummy:

Shenmue Chat / A Push for a Shenmue Steam Port

Tomorrow I'll be tweeting asking SEGA to consider porting Shenmue to Steam, as they have done with some of their other titles. I'm asking you all to do the same.

Recently, SEGA have added more features to some of their Steam games such as achievements and trading cards (, which shows that they are getting a decent revenue from the digital download avenue. They recently also claimed that "package games" (physical media) sales were down and they believe that particular market to be "softening" (, while their apps and such were still selling strong. After announcing that, it seems strange that they would pour extra money into Steam ports, unless those ports are bringing them decent profits.

They've been very friendly with Steam so far, releasing a total of 332 games, DLCs and packages to the digital distribution platform. Steam takes a smaller cut of the profits than XBLA for example (I'm not 100% sure about that, but I believe it's true), and Steam digital downloads are more popular than console digital downloads at this moment in time. Moreover, as Shenmue was developed on a system that was Windows-based, it seems like porting it for Windows might be less costly than making it run on PS4 or X1 architecture.

A lot of this is conjecture, but either way, a Steam version of Shenmue would certainly be popular. Steam has a massive, rapidly increasing user base who love retro games. Many Steam players don't get about graphics, they care about inventiveness, story and gameplay. It is my opinion that a great deal of Steam users would pick up Shenmue purely to see what all the fuss is about. Additionally, as we are a devoted community, we would ensure that the front page reviews were all positive, to encourage more purchases of the game.

It seems like a profitable possibility for SEGA to port Shenmue to Steam, and it could be exactly what the series needs in order to increase our fanbase and ensure that SEGA opens their eyes to the potential of Shenmue 3. I'll be tweeting to SEGA, Steam, SEGA communities and gaming media outlets with the pleas to port Shenmue to Steam, and I'd love it if as many of you as possible could do the same.

2) You post the name of a character who could beat that person up, under certain circumstances (the funnier the better).
3) Next person replies naming another character who could beat up the previous character under new circumstances.

Shenmue Chat / Campaign Idea: Vine Videos

Twitter seems to love Vine. The short videos play and loop really easily on Twitter, and show up straight away, unlike some pictures which require you to click on a link to view. They have the potential to go viral much quicker than pictures or youtube vids.

So I propose that a bunch of us make some vine videos for the next Shenmue campaign. Anything from Charlie being hit in the face with a ball, to a funny glitch, or an awesome combo of moves. Something that other gamers will see and relate to.

What say you?

I was thinking, if we each saved our money for 2 sets of capsules (for example, SEGA and Vehicles), we'd complete those sets and have doubles ready to trade very early. Then, people know who to come to if they need to trade in order to complete a set. It also decreases the random variable, because we'll be trading for toys to make up collections rather than shooting wildly in the dark so to speak.

What's up everyone!

Recently I've been thinking it would be great to have a running database of VMU saves (both NTSC and PAL) for as many points in Shenmue as possible. This will help people to quickly get to scenes they want to see, gather media, and hack / translate parts of the game more efficiently.

So this thread will serve to store urls for loads of VMU bin files (eg: vmu_data_port01.bin) in an easy to follow database. Eventually it could be made into a page on my website for easier access and organisation, but for now I figured a thread is a good starting point. I decided to post it here instead of at the Dojo in order to encourage more interaction and traffic on this site, which I believe is going to be very interesting eventually. I will post the list on the Dojo at some point later, though.

So if you have any .bin files, please post the link here and let me know at which part of the game the 3 saves are at, as well as any other details that might be pertinent. I'll also post up pre-hacked saves on this thread, such as saves with lots of money, saves at hacked times, etc.

Are there any plans to give X yen per day to each member? I was just thinking, it would keep members logging on each day to spend their yen on capsules, games, etc.

Incidentally, how's everyone's collection coming along? I have 3 capsules that I never found in game! lol

I've tried twice now, and it seems to just take my yen and tell me I don't have enough change to buy one. I can't see anything in my inventory yet. Just reporting in case it's a bug.

Shenmue Chat / nullDC Cheater Codes

I decided it's about time I shared my rapidly-increasing library of Cheater codes I've found recently. So here they are.

These codes will work for nullDC Cheater, on the NTSC version of Shenmue I (the codes may only work on disc 1). They won't work for undub, and I'm unsure if they work on Gameshark / Game Genie either. You can get null DC cheater from here. This program is in German, however, so you might need to tinker around with it until you get what all the buttons do. You'll also need to rename the cheater .exe file to match the name of you nullDC version .exe. So for example, my nullDC exicutable is named "nulldc," so I had to rename the cheater to "nulldcCheater." Remember to also click "trainer is aus" to turn it on once you've added the codes. Any further questions, just post here.

If you have any codes you've found yourself, please post them here and I'll add them to the list. You might be able to find codes that do other things by editing some of the existing codes, so good luck on your search! Most codes can be changed by editing the last string of numbers. For example, from 00000001 to 00000002 might cause the code to do something else.
